Outrage Over Smirking Teens In MAGA Hats 'Mocking' Native American War Veteran. This is the moment smirking teens wearing 'Make America Great Again' hats appeared to mock a Native American Vietnam War hero.
Caught on camera, the gaggle of young men surround 64-year-old Nathan Phillips, who was in Washington DC, US, for The Indigenous Peoples March.
The tense clip shows one boy standing inches from Mr Phillips's face stock still and motionless as he chanted a native song of unity and played a traditional drum.
The Indigenous Peoples March clashed with an anti-abortion rally, which saw students from the Covington Catholic High School in Kentucky travel to the US capital to attend.
Mr Phillips said he heard them chanting 'Build that wall' - in relation to President Donald Trump's plan to build a giant wall across the Mexican border.
The Omaha tribe elder, who served in the US Army between 1972 and 1976, said he was "shaken and overwhelmed" by the encounter - with the boys' behaviour having been widely criticised across the internet.
Mr Phillips is also a co-founder of the Native Youth Alliance cultural and education group, turning up to Arlington National Cemetery every Veterans Day with a peace pipe to pay tribute to Native Americans who served in the U.S. army.
He later told The Washington Post : “It was getting ugly, and I was thinking: ‘I’ve got to find myself an exit out of this situation and finish my song at the Lincoln Memorial.
"I started going that way, and that guy in the hat stood in my way and we were at an impasse. "I'm still trying to process what happened. I’m feeling a little bit overwhelmed." Kaya Taitano, a Indigenous Peoples March participant said. "They just surrounded him and they were mocking him and mocking the chant. We really didn't know what was going to happen there."
The school and the Diocese of Covington issued a joint statement to the Cincinnati Enquirer over the weekend to directly apologise to Mr Phillips.
