Carpet Python Attempts To Drown Ticks Sucking Blood From Its Body. A carpet python found cowering in a swimming pool while covered in paralysis ticks has been described by a snake catcher as the worst he had ever seen.
Experienced snake catchers Tony and Brooke Harrison discovered the traumatised snake wrapped around a pipe at the bottom of a semi-filled pool at Coolangatta on the Gold Coast on Thursday.
After seeing the reptile covered in dozens of ticks, Mr Harrison explained to the pool's owner the snake had been trying to drown the hundreds of ticks sucking blood from its body.
'He's got hundreds of ticks on him - he's trying to drown them. They're all over his body,' he explained in hand-held footage.
Mr and Mrs Harrison, who have 32 years of snake-catching experience between them, explained the python would die unless he was taken to the vet and the ticks removed.
Mr Harrison said: 'Reptiles have a high resilience to ticks. One or two would be fine but this would kill him.'
'We'll take him to the vets and he'll be OK, but there's a couple of hundred of ticks on him.'
The snake catcher proceeded to pull the snake out of the pool to show the bemused owner the dozens of ticks lining the snake's head.
Commenters on the Gold Coast and Brisbane Snake Catcher Facebook page, where the footage was posted, were full of sympathy for the tick-stricken python.
'Poor fella! He won't know himself when they are all removed. Great work you guys.'
In a follow-up video posted to the Facebook page, Mr Harrison announced he was running a competition for his followers to guess how many ticks were on the python.
The snake catchers told Daily Mail Australia there would be more updates on the snakes when the vet had removed all the ticks.
Paralysis ticks are often found on house pets like cats and dogs.
Particularly large ticks - between 3mm and 10mm in length - can kill if not removed.
